PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic lathe ensuring detection as to whether or not a workpiece is being held and whether or not a cutting tool has been broken, without necessitating enlargement of its arrangement. SOLUTION: When the workpiece W has been cut normally by a cut-off tool, a tool rest 4 advances and an abutting member 13 also advances along with the tool rest 4 without its movement being restricted. When the abutting member 12 and a shaft member 31 advance along with the tool rest 4, a detecting switch 53 is kept in its off state. If the workpiece W has not been cut normally, a detecting element 14 abuts against the workpiece W so that movement of the abutting member 12 and the shaft member 31 in the direction perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece W is restricted. Once the movement of the abutting member 12 and the shaft member 31 is restricted, the detecting switch 53 is converted from the off state to an on state. To hold the workpiece W, the tool rest 4 is advanced so that second energizing forces are imparted to the abutting member 12 and the shaft member 31 by a first spring 51 and a second spring 52.
