PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an envelope content discrimination apparatus capable of relatively rapidly discriminating whether the contents of a large number of envelopes are acceptable. SOLUTION: A feed route 18 for continuously feeding envelopes is provided, and a movable roller 40, which moves corresponding to the thickness of each of the envelopes, and a fixed roller 41 are provided on the way of the feed route. Further, a lever 44, which has first and second arms 42 and 43 and is supported in a shakable manner at an intermediate shaft support part 45, is provided, and the movable roller is supported at the leading end part of the first arm. When the movable roller is moved corresponding to the thickness of each envelope, the leading end of the second arm is moved and the thickness of the envelope can be detected by measuring the distance from an optical displacement sensor 46. From the detected thickness of the envelope, it can be detected whether a prescribed number of papers are housed in the envelope, without opening the envelope.
