PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a sewing machine from scattering oil during needle bar ascending and to enable the sewing machine to smoothly change colors by reducing a difference in level between the top face of an engaging member of a driven needle bar and the top face of an engaging member of a resting needle bar. SOLUTION: Color changing work is done by selecting a needle bar 23x to be driven from plural needle bars 23. This sewing machine is set so that the top face of the driven needle bar 23x reached the top dead center is to be at a position lower than the top face of a resting needle bar 23 when the top face of the driven needle bar 23x reached the top dead center abuts on a press roller 14. A resting needle bar pressing down member 50 from the free condition is equipped so that difference in level between the top face of the resting needle bar 23 and the top face of the driven needle bar 23x generated by the setting is reduced to an extent the press roller 14 can get over during color changing.
