摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a data quantity from being increased by selectively compressing data at a 1st compression rate and to enhance image quality of a still picture reproduction by extracting a still picture compressed at the 1st compression rate. SOLUTION: A digital camera 10 includes a CPU 32, and, in a moving picture mode, an SDRAM 28 once stores a plurality of photographed still image data. The still picture data for each frame are given to a JPEG CODEC 30. The JPEG CODEC 30 receives compression rate data from the CPU 32 and compresses the still picture data according to the compression rate data. A plurality of the still picture data are compressed for each frame at a 2nd compression rate, and a head frame, an end frame and frames corresponding to a multiple of four are compressed at a 1st compression rate (low compression rate) smaller than the 2nd compression rate. Since part of the still picture data is compressed at the low compression rate, the amount of the moving picture data does not become very large. Thus, the total data amount is not too much increased. Furthermore, deterioration in image quality can by prevented in the case of still picture reproduction by extracting the still picture data compressed at the low compression rate.
