The invention relates to apparatus for identifying vehicle overloading. The apparatus includes a proximity type sensor (24) that is located on a vehicle in a configuration in which it can sense when a predetermined maximum load permitted to be carried on the vehicle, is being exceeded. The apparatus includes also communicating means (40) and a control circuit, the communicating means being operable to communicate, via identifiable signals, with a second remotely located communicating means (70). Such communication will occur in response to the proximity type sensor sensing an overload condition on an associated vehicle. Overloaded vehicles can thus be identified while travelling along a road, the second communicating means (70) either being provided at a control station along a roadside or on a patrol vehicle. |
