PURPOSE: A control unit of an automatic transmission is provided to perform proper control with good response property according to the reduction need of a driver. CONSTITUTION: A control unit of an automatic transmission is equipped with reduction need decision devices(5,6), and an up-shift movement forbiddance device(3). The reduction need decision devices decides the need of reduction. The up-shift movement forbiddance device forbids up-shift movement of a transmission(15) if the need of reduction is decided from the opening speed of an accelerator and the like. Therefore, a vehicle is prevented from being accelerated by up-shift contrary to the driver's intention and then downshift is smoothly performed. Engine brake by downshift is effectively worked. Therefore, performing of up-shift and down shift in short time is prevented and proper control is performed with good response property according to the reduction need of the driver.
