PURPOSE: A handshaking method of a passbook printer is provided to improve a managing ability of an error state of a passbook printer by informing a state of the passbook printer to a computer with accuracy in the case that the passbook printer is connected through a parallel port of a computer. CONSTITUTION: Data(ESC j, ESC i) of the first and second state request instructions are transmitted to a passbook printer. A strobe signal(STB) and a busy signal(BUSY) are transmitted after passing a predetermined time. If the busy signal(BUSY) and the strobe signal(STB) are inputted through a printer adapter and the state request instruction data(ESC j, ESC i) are inputted, the passbook printer reads and analyzes the state request instruction data(ESC j, ESC i) through a receiving buffer, operates the current passbook printer state signals, displays the state, and transmits the state signals to a computer through a print adapter. The computer reads the data through the receiving buffer, judges the state of the passbook printer, and transmits a response signal thereto to the passbook printer through the print adapter.
