A polymer comprising a plurality of pendant cationic groups such as an amino or ammonium group with each cationic group connected to the polymer backbone via an aliphatic spacer group is used to inhibit a pathogenic toxin in a mammal such as a toxin associated with Shigella dysenteriae or Giardia lamblia.
