The motor vehicle has a steering column (4) with a steering wheel (2) and a rack and pinion (7,8) drive for steering the wheels. the power steering assist has an electric motor (15) which operates a second pinion (20) engaging the rack. The assist has a detection circuit for steering column conditions to operate the electric motor. The control signal is modified by load detectors for the wheel steering linkages (10).
