The instrument is able to use a digital measuring technique providing output data in digital format. - DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The method for determining intra-ocular pressure uses a modified version of Goldmann's applanation tonometer. The external force applied on the cornea by a plane push piece is increased until the deformed section of eyeball attains a certain surface size. The result is read on a graduated drum. The equipment is enhanced by the addition of a position sensor, such as an integrated optical sensor, enabling the result to be produced in digital electronic form. The sensor may be an incremental optical encoder operating on two channels, with a reference position detector as well. The position measurement may alternatively be another optical, magnetic, inductive of capacitive device operating without contact.
