PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide inexpensive steel and cast steel for a hot press anvil excellent in high temperature strength, high temperature settling resistance, cracking resistance, wear resistance, scale adhesion resistance and heat check resistance, reduced in the frequency of repairing an anvil and further prolonging the service life of an anvil. SOLUTION: This steel for a hot press anvil has a composition containing, by weight, <=0.08% C, <=1.0% Si, <=2.0% Mn, 20.0 to 27.0% Ni, 10.0 to 16.0% Cr, 0.1 to 2.0% Al, 1.0 to 3.0% Ti and 0.0005 to 0.01% B, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
