PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine controller comprising a failure detecting device of starting system capable of surely determing the failure of a start inhibiting means for inhibiting the start of an engine in the case of connecting a filling nozzle to a fuel filling port of an automobile, that is, during the filling of the fuel to a fuel storage means of the engine, and a control means in failure. SOLUTION: This engine controller comprises the failure detecting device of the starting system having a fuel storage means, a starting means for starting the engine, a filling condition detecting means for detecting a fuel filling condition to the fuel storage means, and a starting condition detecting means for detecting a starting condition of the engine. The failure detecting device of starting system comprises a failure determinig means and a start inhibiting means in fuel filling for inhibiting the start by the starting means in the case of detecting the fuel filling condition by the filling condition detecting means. The failure determining means determines the failure of the start inhibiting means in fuel filling the case when the starting condition detecting means detects the starting condition when the start is inhibited by the start inhibiting means in fuel fill.
