The invention provides a hair treatment composition such as a shampoo or conditioner suitable for topical application to hair for the repair and prevention of damage, comprising a short chain amine oxide compound of formula: in which R1, R2 and R3 are independently selected from straight or branched, saturated or unsaturated alkyl, alkoxy and hydroxy alkyl chains containing from 1 to 7 carbon atoms.
