An elevator device, wherein a cage (4) and a balance weight (5) are suspended by a 1:1 roping system inside a hoistway (1), a drive device (9) is disposed so that the axis of a drive sheave (11) extends along a vertical direction, and a first direction changing wheel (17) leading a main rope (12) from the drive device (9) to the cage (4) and a second direction changing wheel (18) leading the main rope (12) from the drive device (9) to the balance weight (5) are disposed at the inner upper part of the hoistway (1).
