PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device which can yield a bright and high contrast projected picture. SOLUTION: This projection type display device is provided with: a polarized light separation optical system 101 for polarizing and separating a light beam from a light source L; a color separation optical system PR for color-separating the light beam polarized and separated with the separation optical system 101 to a plurality of color light beams; a reflection type light valve 106R or the like for modulating and emitting the individual color light beams emitted from the separation optical system PR; a color synthesizing optical system PR for synthesizing the light beam emitted from the light valve; and an analyzing optical system 101 for analyzing the synthesized light. In this display device, the separation optical system 101 and the analyzing optical system 101 are commonly utilized by a common polarizing beam splitter 101, and a 1/4 wavelength plate 105R or the like is provided in an optical path between the splitter 101 and the light valve 106R, and the light valve 106R or the like, the beam splitter 101 and the wavelength plate 105R or the like are arranged to have a specified relative positional relation. |
