The air bag module for a motor vehicle has a housing (14) with a gas generator (14) on its base. The housing has a lid (30) behind which is a folded air bag (16). The gas generator has a diffusor (22) between it and the air bag. The diffusor has a fixed section (24) and a relatively movable section (26) which closes off openings (28) in the diffusor. The movable section pushes the air bag outwardly when the generator is activated to release the gas outlet openings.
