The invention relates to a cord-type gas generator for inflating an airbag used as a component of a safety device in a vehicle, provided with a solid fuel strand made from a gas generating material and ignition means. The cord-type gas generator is disposed in an airbag ( airbag curtain 11,30) containing at least two chambers (14) and the solid fuel strand (17) is interrupted in an area (15, 36) which lies inbetween two chambers (14). The ignition means (19) is applied to the inside of the envelope (18) transversing the length of the cord-type gas generator (16).
