Operating procedure for an internal combustion engine having at least two different operating modes. For each mode the amount of fuel to be injected and the sparking angle are controlled. During switching between one mode and the other the control unit takes into account the old and new operating modes in setting the fuel amount to inject and the sparking angle. An Independent claim is made for a device for controlling internal combustion engine operation using a control unit that regulates the fuel amount injected and the sparking angle.
