PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct acting type relief valve that produces stable damping force, suppresses an inclination to the side and suppresses dispersion ion static characteristics such as an override characteristic. SOLUTION: The direct acting type relief valve comprises a housing 10 having a small-diameter hole 13 and a large-diameter hole 17, which small- diameter hole is connected to a high-pressure inlet port 12 and large-diameter hole is connected to a relatively low-pressure discharge port 16, and having a valve seat 14 formed between both holes 13 and 17, a poppet valve element 30 having a valve element portion 31 capable of separable contact with the valve seat 14 and a collar portion 35 facing with a micro annular clearanceδthe inner surface of the large-diameter hole 17, a spring 37 disposed in the large-diameter hole 17 of the housing 10 to urge the poppet valve element 30 so that the valve element portion 31 thereof is seated on the valve seat 14 of the housing 10, and a damper formed when a spring chamber 27 defined in the large-diameter hole 17 by the collar portion 35 of the poppet valve element 30 is connected via the annular clearanceδto a secondary pressure chamber 28 connected to the discharge port 16.
