The various difficulties with existing selection methods for engineered products are overcome by providing a standardized process for gathering, analyzing, interpreting and deriving data relating to the selection process. In particular, information about resources that interact with the engineered product are stored in a database. For example, for seals, equipment dimensional profiles for standard equipment are stored in a database. This database may be searched using several kinds of identification information of the equipment. Help information may be provided to indicate to the user how to make proper measurements on the equipment. In addition, dimension verification information is provided to assist the user in verifying that the equipment has not been modified. Given proper identification of a resource, such as equipment, a compatibility analysis is performed between the equipment and the engineered product in a product database to determine which products are dimensionally compatible with the identified equipment. This compatibility information may be stored with the information about the resource in the database of resource information.
