<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems in a liquid crystal panel using a method of generating an electric field effectively parallel to the substrate such that the effective refractive index anisotropy of the liquid crystal decreases by the presence of a region where an electric field perpendicular to the substrate is more dominant for the liquid crystal in the column than an electric field parallel to the substrate and that this causes decrease in the luminance of the liquid crystal panel. SOLUTION: Rising in the liquid crystal 20 by the electric field at the electrode edges of interdigital pixel electrodes 8 and common electrodes 3 can be suppressed and higher luminance of the liquid crystal panel can be obtained by using a liquid crystal material under specified conditions relating to the elastic constants for splay deformation and bend deformation of the liquid crystal 20, for example, with the elastic constant K11 for splay deformation ranging 6 pN<K11<25 pN.</p> |
