PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which is capable of efficiently reading a fluorescent image at a high signal-to-noise ratio by detecting residual fluorescence. SOLUTION: This device has laser exciting light sources 1 to 3, a stage 20 on which an image carrying member 21 is placed, a scanning mechanism which scans the surface of the image carrying member 21 by the laser beams 4 emitted from the laser exciting light sources 1 to 3 and excites the image carrying member 21 by the laser beams 4, a photodetector 33 which photoelectrically detects the fluorescence 25 excited by the laser beams 4 and emitted from the image carrying member 21 and a confocal optical system which introduces the fluorescence 25 emitted from the image carrying member 21 to the photodetector 33. The device has a pinhole forming member 31 having a pinhole 32 between the confocal optical system and the photodetector 33. The pinhole forming member 31 is constituted movably.
