PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handwritten character recognizing method which can accurately judge the line feed position of characters handwritten on an electronic blackboard, etc., without specifying the line feed position and can recognize the handwritten characters in plural lines according to the judged result. SOLUTION: A histogram to writing directions is obtained as plural stroke group objects inputted in the order of the strokes from a handwritten character input device, a part having a small number of writing points is selected as a line feed position candidate according to the histogram, and the vector from the end point to the start point of adjacent stroke at stroke input time in the stroke group and the mean length of the vector are obtained; and the mean length of a vector in the line feed position candidate is compared with the mean length of the mentioned vector to judge the position of a vector exceeding a threshold for line feed judgement as the line feed position, and a handwritten character string consisting of the plural stroke groups is recognized according to the judged result of the line feed position.
