An image forming apparatus capable of realizing an improvement in terms of apparatus size and productivity and obtaining a satisfactory image includes a conveyance driving motor M1 for driving conveyance roller pairs 41, 42, and 43, a pre-registration conveyance roller pair 44, and a registration roller pair 10; an image formation driving source for driving photosensitive drums 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d; and a control unit for controlling the conveyance driving motor M1 and the image formation driving source such that the speed at which a sheet material is conveyed by the conveyance roller pairs 41, 42, and 43, and the pre-registration conveyance roller pair 44 is variable, and that the speed at which the sheet material is conveyed by the registration roller pair 10 is substantially the same as the speed at which the sheet material is conveyed by an image forming device.
