A system can process a digital representation of a document with a one-way cryptographic hash function to yield a digital fingerprint (120) value that is associated with the digital representation. A document identification number (290) is created, uniquely associated with the digital fingerprint (120), and with document identification number (290) and digital fingerprint (120) are associated optional credential information. A registration certificate (400) that represents an optional electronic signature associated with the document and that included the document identification number (290) and digital fingerprint (120) is promulgated and archived at a plurality of storage locations. |
