The invention relates to a device and a method for controlling an internal combustion engine. At least one first partial injection and a second partial injection are provided per injection cycle. One of the two partial injections is displaced in the presence of certain operating states. A correcting value for a variable which is characteristic for the delivery period is determined in dependence on this displacement of the partial injection.
