PURPOSE: A method for controlling a cooling operation in an air conditioner is provided to controlling melting time of a heat exchanger in stopping a compressor by rising temperature and to prevent efficiency of cooling operation from dropping. CONSTITUTION: Structure for controlling a cooling operation in an air conditioner comprises a heat exchanger operated by an evaporator by being mounted in an indoor device; a heat exchanger operated by a condenser by being mounted on an outdoor device; a compressor pressurizing refrigerant; an expansion device controlling temperature and pressure of the refrigerant; a pipe sensor monitoring freezing of the heat exchanger by detecting temperature of a pipe; an indoor temperature detecting sensor measuring indoor temperature; and an outdoor temperature detecting sensor. The refrigerant is compressed by the compressor and is transferred into the heat exchanger. A method for controlling a cooling operation comprises a step of inputting(S11) an operation signal on an air conditioner; discriminating(S12) whether the operation signal is a cooling mode or not; confirming(S13), whether a compressor has to be operated, by a control unit; discriminating(S14) whether a specific time(T1) passed when a compressor operates; discriminating(S15) whether a detection temperature is lower than a specific temperature(X Deg.C); counting(S16) the number of stoppage of the compressor; discriminating(S17) whether the number of stoppage of the compressor reaches a specific value(y); determining(S18) the operation mode of the low temperature by the control unit in case of reaching the specific value(y); canceling(S20) the operation mode of the low temperature of the compressor.
