A chemical sensor consisting of a microcartridge having a microchannel formed thereon, a sensor chip provided on the microcartridge, and a prism provided on this sensor chip. In the sensor chip, a metal film is formed on one face of the substrate and an immobilization member is further formed thereon. To detect a chemical by using this chemical sensor, a sample and a solution containing an odor-binding protein are flown through the microchannel and thus the odor-binding protein is immobilized on the immobilization member. Then the chemical in the sample is detected based on the amount of the immobilized odor-binding protein.
