The method is for the choice of protective mechanism (10) in an optical network incorporating nodes and links between nodes and involves the required protective mechanism taking the form of a single optical end protection (12), and a single optical line protection (14). THe optical end protection is preferred but another choice of protective mechanism is promoted from the status of the network. User data concerning desired protection mechanism is stored in a memory (22). In the event of a network fault, the protective mechanism is selected from the stored user data. The network is analyzed and investigation is made as to which protective mechanism is the most suitable with regard to e.g. resource-using or changeover time. |
