A machine with a user interface comprises text input means, means of storing mark-up instructions corresponding to respective passages of the text and search means using certain input words from the user to identifying a required passage of the text using word scores. The mark-up instructions associated with the passage with the highest score, or highest probability of being the required passage, may be used to provide a message or prompt to the user to confirm that the required passage has been identified. On approval of the said passage the appropriate action based on the passage will be performed. On disapproval of the passage the score on the said passage is reduced and the next most probable passage is then identified to the user via its associated mark-up instructions. The mark-up instructions may provide a spoken response, or some other dialogue response, to the query words input by a user. The above arrangement may be used in a spoken dialogue system (SDS). |
