Controlling a backlight in a portable communication terminal comprising designating a lighting colour, setting a lighting time for a timer, displaying data on display section and turning on the backlight to illuminate the display in the designated colour and turning off the backlight when the timer is in a time-out state. One embodiment relates to a message received from a server of a web site wherein the lighting colour corresponds to the priority of the message s306, s307. Furthermore, a standard lighting time may be set s305, which is used by the timer unless the message length is more than a predetermined value in which case the lighting time is calculated based on the length of the message s308. A second embodiment relates to designating a specific colour for the backlight when the display is showing data content from a server of a web site. Furthermore the backlight may be turned on when acquisition of the data is ended and turned off when the timer reaches its time-out state. |
