PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a petroleum resin, wherein the solubility of the resin in a nonaromatic solvent is improved without lowering the softening point. SOLUTION: In producing an aromatic petroleum resin, fractions having a boiling point of 140-220 deg.C, obtained by the pyrolysis of a petroleum, and tert-butylstyrene are polymerized in the presence of an acid catalyst. The aromatic petroleum resin obtained by this process is suitable for application to a printing ink.
