PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing ethylene glycol monobenzyl ether which is useful as an intermediate for medicines such as anti-AIDS agents. SOLUTION: This method for producing the ethylene glycol monobenzyl ether is characterized by thermally reacting a benzyl halide with ethylene glycol in an amount of three-fold moles or more that of the benzyl halide in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide.
