PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a quality application surface by effectively preventing the generation of pinholes in a coating liquid layer applied on a sheet material without reducing the application speed of the coating liquid. SOLUTION: A coating roll 2 for coating the surface of the sheet material 1 with the coating liquid, coating liquid chambers 4 and 5 installed along the circumferential surface of the roll 2, and coating liquid supply means 6 and 7 for supplying the coating liquid to the chambers 4 and 5 are provided. A coating liquid bank 8 facing a part of the circumferential surface of the roll 2 is formed in each of chambers 4 and 5, the downstream side in the rotational direction of the bank 8 is sealed, and a doctor blade for removing the excess coating liquid adherent to the roll 2 is installed.
