PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition containing ethylidene tetracyclododecene as the principal component, having high reaction efficiency, low in the occurrence of gelation, and suitability for a wide range of polymerizations, and to provide its preparing process. SOLUTION: The preparing process comprises the reacting of 5-ethylidene-2- norbornene with cyclopentadiene and/or dicyclopentadiene in a specific ratio under specified conditions of temperature, dwell time and pressure, then the distilling thereof under a reduced pressure. It is preferably on this occasion that the total content of cyclopentadiene trimers is limited to a specified range.
