Method for modifying the chemical, electrical or physical surface properties of a workpiece by applying a coating to at least an area of the surface of said workpiece. The aim of the invention is to provide a technically simple method with which the surface of the workpiece can be coated specifically, selectively or completely. To this end, components are added to a toner as the transfer medium that correspondingly modify the surface properties, and said toner is applied to the surface of the workpiece by electrophotography.
