A reinforced panel structure of the type comprising a mat of fabric material which is impregnated, for example within a two-part mould, with a curable resin or the like, and in which the fabric material comprises a knitted fabric. A knitted fabric can be relied upon to conform more reliably and predictably to particular mould shapes than the conventionally-used fabrics. Advantageously the knitted fabric has a fairly open structure in which the stitch length - the distance between the stitches when the yarn between stitches is substantially straight - is greater than the distance between the stitches. This may be achieved during manufacture of the knitted fabric by applying tension to the knitted fabric emerging from the knitting machine. In the preferred embodiment, the fabric is knitted on a double bed knitting machine. |
