PURPOSE: The tetracyclic and pentacyclic compounds and the use thereof in a liquid medium are provided, therefore an MLC, TN or STN display, particularly, a reflective MLC display having high specific resistance and low critical voltage can be produced using the title compound having high clearing point, low rotation viscosity and low double refraction. CONSTITUTION: The tetracyclic and pentacyclic compounds are represented by formula(1), in which R1 and R2 are independently unsubstituted, CN or CF3-substituted, or halogen-substituted alkyl or alkenyl radical having carbon number of 15 or less, wherein one or more Cl2 may be substituted with -O-, -S-, -CO-, -CO-O-, -O-CO- or -O-CO-O-; Z is -OCF2-, -CF2O- or a single bond; L1, L2, L3 and L4 are independently H or F; and M is 1 or 2. The liquid medium comprising a mixture of polar compounds having positive dielectricity contains a compound of formula(1), and at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by formulae(2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8), respectively. |
