PURPOSE: A smart antenna system for mobile communication base station is provided to increase capacity by applying a smart antenna algorithm to the base station using a channel element modem. CONSTITUTION: A smart antenna system comprises first, second, third and fourth base station demodulators(100,110,120,130) for receiving signals output from a plurality of antennas installed in a base station, and demodulating the received signals; a channel element processor(150) for receiving the signals output from first to fourth base station demodulators, and outputting the received signals to a deinterleaver(140); and a viterbi decoder(160) for decoding the deinterleaved signal output from the deinterleaver, by using a chip exclusively used in a reverse direction link. The channel element processor includes a symbol combiner, a search controller and a power controller incorporated into the channel element processor.
