An image processing apparatus judges the degree of similarity between entered image data and characterizing data of a special image (an image containing a special original such as a bank note or negotiable instrument) prepared in advance, generates data indicative of the degree of similarity and integrates similarity data in two-dimensional space while subjecting the entered image data to image processing conforming to the results of integration.
