Photoelectric detector functions by transmission and receipt of pulsed signals. The detector controller determines if an interference impulse (22B) with similar characteristics to self-originating impulses is situated in a guard zone (Zf,Zr) in front and behind of the normal reception zone (12A). If an interference impulse is detected in the guard zone, the controller applies a corrective displacement (Td) to the transmitted pulses, such that interference pulses fall outside the guard zone.
