PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image sensor unit which can obtain a good image by securing a proper and equal quantity of light at all times, and an image reader equipped with this. SOLUTION: This system reads the image of a manuscript by irradiating an original with light from a light source, and entering the reflected light from the original into a sensor through an image forming optical system. The light source includes a light emitting element and a light guide which leads the light of this light emitting element to the above manuscript, and the peak of the luminous energy of the light source is set to a position a little upper than the focus center position of the image forming optical system or a manuscript placing face 17. This has the peak 19 of luminous energy within a luminous flux crossing region 18 made by the light guide of each light source. This has an effective luminous energy range 20 in the vicinity of the peak 19 of luminous energy, and the focus center position and the placing face 17 of an original placing member are included in this effective luminous energy range 20.
