PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bill identifying device capable of reducing influence of variation of luminescence amount on light receiving elements and identifying bills at a high speed. SOLUTION: When the light emitting elements connected in series are made to emit light at a luminance corresponding to a light receiving level of a light receiving elements corresponding to each light emitting element, order of the light emission is changed from a weak side to a strong side.
