PURPOSE: A circuit and a method for controlling the temperature of a second harmonic generator are provided to reduce a period of time required for stabilizing the second harmonic output and accurately select the peak value of the second harmonic output beam. CONSTITUTION: Bias current is divided into first bias current and the second bias current, and the first and second bias currents are sequentially applied to a hot electron cooler(7) before and after initializing pumping. The first bias current corresponding to 40-50% of the current flowing through the hot electron cooler when the second harmonic output beam is stabilized is applied to the hot electron cooler in advance before pumping beam is applied to the second harmonic generator. Then, the pumping beam is applied to the second harmonic generator and, simultaneously, the second bias current corresponding to 90% of the current flowing through the hot electron cooler when the second harmonic output beam is stabilized is applied to the hot electron cooler.
