PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device that reduces deterioration in the resolution caused when pixel signals from an image pickup element are additively read. SOLUTION: In the case of horizontally summing pixel signals after vertical summation, a summed phase is inverted in the unit of rows after the vertical summation. Thus, the generated array of unit pixels after summation results in a so-called zigzag array where phases are inverted by each row, and the column pitch is made equal to the column pitch (p) of original pixels of the image pickup element so as to generate an image with less deterioration in the horizontal resolution.
