PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely suspend the start of a prescribed initialization operation which is not required in every communication with an external device, to reduce a power consumption, and to prevent the durability degradation of a member or the like due to the start of the prescribed initialization operation. SOLUTION: When the nonoperating time of an image readout is continued for a prescribed time, the supply state of a power supply is controlled in such a way that the image readout is changed to a sleep state that the supply of electric power is cut off automatically, or that the image readout is returned to an operating state accompanied by the prescribed initialization operation from the sleep state. The control method is constituted in such a way that a CPU 425 discriminates whether the content of a communication request refers to an information acquisition request or not at every communication request with the external device, that, when the content of the communication request is discriminated as the information acquisition request, the restart instruction of the supply of the electric power to the image reader 403 is reproted, and that a nonoperating mode which suspends the atart of the prescribed initialization operation is reproted to the image reader 403.
