In the catalytic production of organic substances (I), by partial oxidation of an organic starting material (II), in the presence of oxygen, in one or a series of reactors containing catalyst (III) to give a gaseous product mixture, at least one reactor is a cooling tube reactor with cooling fluid flowing through the tubes. The outside of the tubes is coated with (III). In the catalytic production of organic substances (I), by partial oxidation of an organic starting material (II), in the presence of oxygen (O2) at 200-500 deg C, in one or a series of reactors containing catalyst (III) to give a gaseous product mixture, at least one reactor is a cooling tube reactor with cooling fluid flowing through the tubes. The outside of the tubes is coated with 40-100 wt.% of the total (III) in this reactor. The mixture of (II) and O2 comes into contact with this coating.
