The positioning and orienting method uses intensity variation of the laser beam (3) acting on the small particle (8) from below, for counter-acting the gravitational force, for rotation of the small particle about a vertical axis, with compensation in the variation of the particle height by axial displacement of the focal point of the focusing lens (6) for the laser beam. An Independent claim for an instrument for examination and/or manipulation of a small particle is also included.
