PURPOSE: To provide a drive method of a liquid crystal display device, employing a low resistive lateral direction electric field drive system with which method screen flickering is reduced, and to provide the device. CONSTITUTION: In a lateral direction electric field drive system liquid crystal display device having low resistive liquid crystals, positive and negative pole driving voltages are compensated for so that the average values of the positive and negative pole drive voltages for each gradation are made different respectively, at each gradation and outputted to signal lines. Thus, the potential differences between the average values of positive and negative pole potentials that are written into pixel electrodes and counterposed electrode potentials are made approximately constant, regardless of the displayed gradation. Thus, flickering of the picture is prevented and a high picture quality liquid crystal display device is realized.
