The cross-connect (1) has at least 2 intermediate memories (7) each having fewer inputs then the number of inputs of the cross-connect and fewer outputs than the total number of outputs of the cross-connect. At least one coupling memory (8) is coupled to at least one intermediate memory and contains information relating to the transfer of data packets between a given input and a given output, with a selection device (2) used for pre-selection of the intermediate memory to which the data packets at the inputs of the cross-connect are transferred. An Independent claim for a method of transferring a data packet from an input of a cross-connect to a given output is also included.
